Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina High Country & Grandfather Mountain: An Accessible Fall Drive

Last checked: Oct 16, 2026

Provisional guide: At Moses Cone, the Minerals Museum, the Folk Art Center and Waterrock Knob, parking and staff help aren't verified yet. At Grandfather Mountain's Wilson Center for Nature Discovery, staff help isn't verified yet. Linville Falls, Craggy Gardens, Price Park, Mount Pisgah, Looking Glass Falls and the rest of Grandfather Mountain aren't rated yet because we don't have enough information. We'll update this guide as we confirm more.

The Parkway's North Carolina high country is one of the best places in the East to see fall color from your car. Here's where to stop for accessible restrooms and visitor centers, and what to know about Grandfather Mountain's wheelchair route to the Mile High Swinging Bridge.

At a glance:
  • Heads-up: stairs below the top deck

Closures first (NPS road status as of 7:03 AM Oct 14, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026):

  • MP 344.2–355.3 (NC 80 to Mount Mitchell State Park) is CLOSED, and all recreation in that section is prohibited because of Hurricane Helene damage. You can't reach Mount Mitchell from the Parkway right now. Reopening is targeted for the end of 2026.
  • Short single-lane closures between MP 261 and 305 (Boone/Blowing Rock area). Expect delays.
  • Short, daytime single-lane traffic control between MP 388.8 and 393.6 (Highway 25 / Hendersonville Road to NC Route 191 / Brevard Road) for the duration of a project, per the NPS.
  • Linville Falls campground and picnic area (MP 316.5) are closed.
  • Crabtree Falls campground is closed and hiking is prohibited there. The picnic area is open.
  • Linn Cove Visitor Center (MP 304.4) is temporarily closed. Bluffs Lodge is closed.
  • Virginia: the James River Bridge (MP 63.5–63.9) is closed with a detour; see our Virginia guide.

Check the official road status page (opens in new tab) the day you drive.

When to go

Color on the Parkway depends on elevation, and the highest sections turn first. We haven't found an official NPS forecast for this year, so check before you go: the Parkway's road status page (opens in new tab) and current local color reports.

Before you go

  • The Parkway is 469 miles long. Access has been restored on 458 of them. The other 11 are the closed MP 344–355 section.
  • The NPS says many Parkway facilities are wheelchair accessible, though some have minor slopes or structural barriers. For specifics, call the Parkway at 828-348-3400.
  • The Access Pass is free for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a permanent disability.
  • Fees: there's no entrance fee for the Parkway. Campgrounds charge fees, and Access Pass holders pay a reduced camping fee. (NPS fees (opens in new tab))

  • Grandfather Mountain admission is charged per person and advance reservations are required. Parking is included. Prices aren't listed on the pages we checked, so see grandfather.com (opens in new tab).

Julian Price Lake (MP ~297): the NPS says some of the newer trails at Julian Price Lake are ADA accessible and that the Price Lake fishing pier is accessible. Questions: 828-348-3400 (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official]).

Check this (Blowing Rock TDA, checked Oct 16, 2026): Blowing Rock's tourism office says "There is a dock for accessible fishing. However, the trail leading up to the dock is narrow and in disrepair" (Blowing Rock TDA accessibility (opens in new tab), [Trusted source], checked Oct 16, 2026). The NPS calls the fishing pier accessible. This doesn't change a score; call the Parkway to check the trail before you go.

Julian Price Campground loops B and D have reopened, with reservations through Oct 30. We haven't confirmed how many ADA sites there are, so check the individual listings on Recreation.gov.

Overlooks: there's no official list of overlooks with accessible parking. Scenic pull-offs and overlooks aren't expected to have restrooms, so we don't rate restrooms there; for accessible restrooms, see Plan your restroom stops.

Grandfather Mountain (off US 221, near MP 305)

Grandfather Mountain is a private nature park that you reach by US 221, so it can be open even when parts of the Parkway are closed. These details come from the park's own website.

  • You drive your own vehicle up a 2-mile road with overlooks. You can enjoy the views from the car, and there are picnic tables near the parking.
  • The Mile High Swinging Bridge (228 feet long, at 5,305 feet) can be reached by wheelchair. Take the elevator in the Top Shop to the third floor, then follow a paved path. A 2025 visitor confirms you can "take an elevator to the mile high bridge" (TripAdvisor review, Apr 2025 (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026). The park's own pages differ on the path length: its FAQ (opens in new tab) and Swinging Bridge page (opens in new tab) say about 50 yards, while its grandfather.com accessibility (opens in new tab) page says "a few hundred yards," with one bench near the bridge ([Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Contact the park to confirm before you go.
  • Free ADA viewfinders with color-blind (EnChroma) lenses are at Half Moon Overlook and near the bridge, and there are viewfinders near the Wilson Center gift shop (grandfather.com accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • Restrooms: Yonni's Clubhouse (opened April 2026, next to the Wilson Center) is ADA-accessible, with restrooms. The Wilson Center is one level and fully wheelchair accessible. The Top Shop has restrooms; the park's own pages don't say whether they're accessible. Blowing Rock's tourism office says "All bathrooms have at least one accessible stall" and that there are "Assigned spots at all major stops (9 total), hard surface lots" (Blowing Rock TDA accessibility (opens in new tab), [Trusted source], checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • No wheelchair or stroller rentals, so bring your own.
  • Vehicle limits: no RVs over 28 feet and no hinged vehicles. Walking on the road isn't allowed. Regular shuttles run only for large bus groups. An ADA shuttle (a 12- to 14-seat vehicle with a lift and room for two wheelchair users; the park's pages give different seat counts) is available by advance request for groups and special events (grandfather.com accessibility (opens in new tab); adult groups (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Contact the park to confirm.

Mount Mitchell

Parkway access is closed (MP 344–355). Whether you can reach the summit area from the south hasn't been confirmed. Check before you go: call the park at 828-867-4000 or see Mount Mitchell State Park (opens in new tab).

The NPS lists no accessible restroom here, so Restrooms scores 1 of 5. Two local guides agree there's no restroom building at the falls: Burke County Tourism says "There are no nearby restrooms at the parking area. Vault toilets are located 1/4 mile south at the Visitor Information Cabin on Kistler Highway" (Discover Burke County (opens in new tab), noted as current Aug 8, 2025, checked Oct 16, 2026), and Blue Ridge Mountain Life's 2026 update says "Portable toilets are available near the paved parking area. There are no indoor restrooms" (Blue Ridge Mountain Life (opens in new tab), checked Oct 16, 2026). Neither says whether those toilets are accessible. The visitor center is listed as accessible, so Entry scores 5 (Venue states accessible). Plan your restroom stop at the Minerals Museum, MP 331. The NPS lists no accessible restroom here, so Restrooms scores 1 of 5. Two news reports back this up. Asheville Watchdog (May 1, 2026) says "the portable toilets by the visitor center will also remain in place for a while until renovations of the visitor center and other amenities are complete" (Asheville Watchdog (opens in new tab), secondary, checked Oct 16, 2026), and 828 News NOW (Sep 22, 2025) reports that "Construction on new vault toilets is expected to begin in 2026, according to the National Park Service" (828 News NOW (opens in new tab), secondary, checked Oct 16, 2026). Note (Oct 16, 2026): the restrooms there now are portable toilets, and that's what this score covers. Permanent accessible restrooms are funded and coming: an Explore Asheville LIFT grant of $750,000 covers "Permanent, accessible, year-round restroom facilities at the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center and the Craggy Pinnacle Trail parking lot," with a December 2024 – May 2026 timeline (Explore Asheville LIFT: Craggy Gardens (opens in new tab), checked Oct 16, 2026). The falls are 9 miles off the Blue Ridge Parkway on US 276 South in Pisgah National Forest (NPS place page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Heads-up: stairs below the top deck. "To get to the water, wooden steps lead down to a series of large boulders" (NPS place page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). The creek is an optional extra: a visitor notes the stairs are "not needed to see the falls" (TripAdvisor review, Apr 10, 2026 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]).

The NPS table lists both the visitor center and the restrooms as accessible at each of these stops, so Entry and Restrooms score 5 (Venue states accessible). Paths scores 5 (Venue states accessible): the NPS table lists these stops as accessible. Its general note that some Parkway facilities have minor slopes or structural barriers doesn't name these stops, so it isn't a stated barrier here. At Moses Cone, the Blue Ridge Parkway Association says "Outdoor Exhibits and lower level of manor are wheelchair accessible" (BRPA (opens in new tab), secondary, checked Oct 16, 2026), and Explore Boone says the Bass Lake loop is "unpaved but the gravel is suitable for wheelchairs and baby carriages" (Explore Boone (opens in new tab), secondary, undated, checked Oct 16, 2026). Grandfather Mountain's dedicated accessibility page says "The Wilson Center is a one-level building that is fully wheelchair accessible" (grandfather.com accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 15, 2026). That rating covers only this building, not the rest of the mountain. It's a built structure with an official accessible label and no published barrier, so Paths scores 5.
