Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia: An Accessible Fall Drive
Last checked: Oct 16, 2026
Provisional guide: At Humpback Rocks, Explore Park and the Blue Ridge Music Center, parking and staff help aren't verified yet. Rocky Knob and Peaks of Otter / Abbott Lake Trail aren't rated yet because we don't have enough information. We'll update this guide as we confirm more.
The Parkway's Virginia section begins at the southern end of Skyline Drive and winds south toward North Carolina, which makes it easy to pair the two drives. The NPS road status page lists the Peaks of Otter section (MP 76.4–85.9, Apple Orchard Parking Area to VA Route 43, including Peaks of Otter Lodge) as open (NPS road status (opens in new tab), status as of 7:03 AM, Oct 14, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026). We haven't confirmed whether the lodge is operating, so check before you go.
Plan your visit
Closures first (NPS road status as of 7:03 AM Oct 14, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026):
- James River Bridge, MP 63.5–63.9: CLOSED. Follow the detour from MP 61.4 to MP 64.
- Roanoke Mountain Loop (MP 120.3): Closed Until Further Notice.
- Rocky Knob Cabins and Otter Creek Restaurant are closed.
Check the official road status page (opens in new tab) the day you drive.
When to go
We haven't found an official NPS foliage forecast for the Parkway this year, so check before you go using the road status page (opens in new tab) and current color reports. For Virginia, the Shenandoah fall page (opens in new tab) links to the Virginia Department of Forestry foliage report.
Before you go
- The NPS says many Parkway facilities are wheelchair accessible, though some have minor slopes or structural barriers. Call 828-348-3400 for specifics.
- The Access Pass is free for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a permanent disability.
- Fees: there's no entrance fee for the Parkway. Campgrounds charge fees, and Access Pass holders pay a reduced camping fee. (NPS fees (opens in new tab))

What we found
Accessible stops by milepost (VA)
This list comes from the NPS accessibility table. That page was last updated in 2024, so call ahead if a stop is essential to your trip.
| Stop | MP | Accessible visitor center | Accessible restrooms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Humpback Rocks | 5.8 | Yes | Yes |
| James River | 63.8 | Yes | No (bridge section closed) |
| Peaks of Otter | 86 | Yes | Yes |
| Explore Park VC | 115 | Yes | Yes |
| Rocky Knob | 169 | Yes | No |
| Blue Ridge Music Center | 213 | Yes | Yes |
Plan your restroom stops: the reliable accessible restrooms are at Humpback Rocks (MP 5.8), Peaks of Otter (MP 86), Explore Park (MP 115) and the Blue Ridge Music Center (MP 213). The Roanoke Mountain restrooms are left off because the Roanoke Mountain Loop (MP 120.3) is closed until further notice and we couldn't confirm they can still be reached (NPS road status (opens in new tab), checked Oct 16, 2026). Rocky Knob doesn't list accessible restrooms.
Peaks of Otter: the NPS calls the 1-mile Abbott Lake Trail "ADA Accessible" (NPS Peaks of Otter trails (opens in new tab)), and it lists the Otter Lake fishing pier as accessible.
Overlooks: there's no official list of overlooks with accessible parking. Scenic pull-offs and overlooks aren't expected to have restrooms, so we don't rate restrooms there; for accessible restrooms, see Plan your restroom stops.
Check this (secondary source), from a wheelchair-traveling RV blog (Rolling in an RV, Nov 16, 2024 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 15, 2026):
- James River: the canal-lock trail is very steep, and there are steps at the end of the pedestrian bridge. That's on top of the current bridge closure.
- Peaks of Otter: the Abbott Lake loop is level and in good condition, but the path from the parking lot is "pretty steep." The accessible space near the lot entrance has a gentler approach.
- Humpback Rocks: the farm trail is paved, then gravel up to the cabin, then steep and rocky past it.
- Overlooks: some overlook lots are very small, with no room for vans to turn around.

Humpback Rocks (MP 5.8)
At Humpback Rocks you can visit the accessible visitor center, and the first part of the trail to the farm area is paved. Rolling in an RV, a wheelchair-travel blog, found in Nov 2024 that "The first part of the trail to the farmstead is paved and accessible. The gravel section is accessible to the cabin" (Rolling in an RV, Nov 2024 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026).
Heads-up: past the cabin, the farm trail "becomes steep and rocky," and "The buildings are not accessible" (Rolling in an RV, Nov 2024 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026). An Accessible Virginia survey says "the paths are gravel, and do have steep grades requiring assistance for persons in wheelchairs" (Accessible Virginia (opens in new tab), secondary, undated, checked Oct 16, 2026).

The NPS table lists the visitor center and the restrooms as accessible, so Entry and Restrooms score 5 (Venue states accessible) (NPS accessibility table (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Paths scores 4: the NPS table lists the stop as accessible, but two independent sources report steep, rocky grades on the farm trail, which our team counts as a contradiction. Parking is Not verified because the table doesn't cover it. Overall is 4.5 of 5: the average of the 3 rated categories is 4.67, which rounds to 5, but Overall is capped at 4.5 because Paths is lowered with a Why.

Paths scores 5 (Venue states accessible): the NPS table lists these stops as accessible. Its general note that some Parkway facilities have minor slopes or structural barriers doesn't name these stops, so it isn't a stated barrier here. Parking is Not verified because the table doesn't cover it. Overall is 5 of 5, the average of the 3 rated categories.
