Skidaway Island State Park: Sandpiper Trail
Checked on Oct 16, 2026
Provisional guide: the park calls the Sandpiper Trail's boardwalks and level trail ADA accessible, but a wheelchair travel writer reports small steps where the trail meets the boardwalks and roots on part of the loop, and the route from parking to the trailhead isn't described. Entry and parking aren't verified yet. We'll update this guide as we confirm more.
At Skidaway Island State Park, near Savannah, the Sandpiper Trail combines boardwalks and level trail. The park says this "one-mile loop is our most popular trail, taking you over salt flats and tidal creeks, and through maritime forests on island hammocks." "The boardwalks and level trail are ADA accessible" (Skidaway Island trails page (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026).
Free all-terrain trackchair: Georgia State Parks and the Aimee Copeland Foundation "provide free, high mobility all-terrain wheelchairs at several state parks," including "Skidaway Island State Park, Savannah", and "Reservations are required" (Georgia State Parks trackchairs page (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026). Check-out is at the Main Office, 8 am to 4 pm (All-Terrain Georgia locations (opens in new tab), [Trusted], Checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Plan about 10 days ahead for a first visit: certification "approval takes about 7 days" and "All reservations must be made at least 72 hours in advance" (All-Terrain Georgia reservations (opens in new tab), [Trusted], Checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Bring a buddy: each user "must be accompanied by an individual, 18 years of age or older, in good physical condition," and both attend a virtual training and pass an exam (All-Terrain Georgia certification (opens in new tab), [Trusted], Checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Who qualifies: individuals "who are mobility impaired and aged 6 years of age or older," with photo ID and proof of disability for both participant and buddy (same page).
Call to confirm before you go: call the park at 912-598-2300 (Skidaway Island State Park page (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026) about current trail conditions and closures. Trail and tower conditions can change.
- Accessible restrooms
- Track chair available
- Heads-up: steps and roots reported
- Heads-up: confirm the Visitor Center restroom
Plan your visit
- Time: "Plan on an hour of walking time" (Skidaway Island trails page (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Restrooms: the trail map shows "Public Restrooms (Handicap Accessible)" (Skidaway Island trail map (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026). Georgia State Parks lists accessible day-use restrooms at the "Visitor Center and Area 2" (Georgia State Parks accessible facilities (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Staying over: the map notes "an ADA accessible campsite is available," "Cabin B is both wheelchair accessible and dog-friendly," and "Yurt #1 is both wheelchair accessible" (same map).
Heads-up: steps and roots reported. A wheelchair travel writer says "The transitions between the trail and the boardwalks create a small step (about 2 inches)" and that mile marker "I" is "where most roots are located" (wheelchairtraveling.com, updated Nov 13, 2025 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). The writer adds that the step "may hinder some power wheelchairs and scooters," and "When the Sandpiper Trail splits to loop, the pathway to the right has fewer roots." Not confirmed by the park.
Heads-up: confirm the Visitor Center restroom. Georgia State Parks lists "Day Use Restrooms: Visitor Center" as accessible (Georgia State Parks accessible facilities (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026); call 912-598-2300 to confirm which restroom to use.
Heads-up: observation tower closed. "The observation tower is also currently closed" (Skidaway Island State Park page (opens in new tab), [Official], Checked Oct 16, 2026). This is temporary and doesn't change the scores.
Heads-up: wet boardwalks. "Wooden boardwalks can be slippery when wet, especially under trees; this affects people walking (including with canes or walkers) more than people in wheelchairs or scooters."
