Accessibility and ratings

See how we rate

Heads-up: the top of the fort is stairs only. "The terreplein is only accessible by stairs from the ground level. 29 steps are required. They are 8" in height. There are no handrails" (NPS: Fort Pulaski accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026). A 2021 visitor also found "the second story of the fort… is not handicapped accessible" (Mark and Chuck's Adventures, Dec 16, 2021 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). It's an upper level, so it doesn't lower the score.

Heads-up: casemate steps and ramps. "Casemates are accessible by a 6-inch step or by brick or wooden ramps. No handrails are present" (NPS: Fort Pulaski accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026).

Heads-up: unpaved trails. "Dike Trail and Lighthouse Trail surfaces are a mixture of grass and crushed shell, flat but may be uneven." "Grassy areas, including grass trails, may contain holes from armadillo activity" (NPS: Fort Pulaski accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026).

Heads-up: wooden bridges. Wooden boardwalks can be slippery when wet, especially under trees. This affects people walking (including with canes or walkers) more than people in wheelchairs or scooters.
