Accessibility and ratings
Heads-up: the Earth Lodge path and entrance. The park's accessibility page (last updated Oct 9, 2026) says: "The park's Earth Lodge has a long low clearance and narrow entrance and is not accessible to most wheelchairs. The parth to the Earth Lodge has a steep incline of 10%" (NPS: Ocmulgee accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026). The older Main Trail page (last updated Dec 4, 2021) describes "a slight incline at the beginning leading to the Earth Lodge" (NPS: Main Trail (opens in new tab), [Official]). We use the current accessibility page. A 2023 visitor wrote: "The Earth lodge was accessible with a walker up the long path, then just duck your head" (TripAdvisor review, Sep 1, 2023 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]).
Heads-up: mound summits are stairs only. "to get to the top you must climb 80 steps" (NPS: Ocmulgee accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026).
Heads-up: River Trail boardwalk closed. The park's alert (posted as of Nov 2, 2026) says: "Due to structural issues, the boardwalk along the river trail is closed until further notice. Access to the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and river is not available due to this closure. This closure does not affect access to any of the mound sites." (NPS: Ocmulgee conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026)
Heads-up: River Trail periodically closed under I-16. A separate park alert, "River Trail periodically closed under I-16" (Caution, posted as of Nov 2, 2026), says: "The section of the River Trail beneath Interstate 16 is closed during bridge construction when pedestrian safety is at risk and remains open when no significant hazards are present."
