Andrew Jackson's Hermitage
Checked on Oct 16, 2026
Provisional guide: Restrooms and parking aren't verified yet. We'll update this guide as we confirm more.
At the Hermitage, outside Nashville, "The Andrew Jackson Visitor Center, including theater, exhibit gallery, Museum Store and cafe are completely accessible for guests in wheelchairs," and "The Hermitage Mansion is accessible on the first floor" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
Call to confirm before you go: the Hermitage asks you to "Contact us with any questions about specific accessibility or assistance needs." Call (615) 889-2941 or email info@thehermitage.com (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Hours and tours can change.
- Loaner wheelchairs
- Heads-up: the mansion tour includes the second floor, and it's up stairs
- Heads-up: not every path is paved
Plan your visit
- Visitor center: the theater, exhibit gallery, store and café are "completely accessible for guests in wheelchairs" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
- Paths and garden: "The Hermitage pathways are smooth asphalt, and the garden has a ramped entrance" (same page). The FAQ adds that "Many of our paths are paved" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026); see the Heads-up below.
- Getting to the mansion: "Golf cart service is available to/from the mansion, and wheelchairs may be checked out from our Visitor Experience team" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official]).
- The mansion: manual and power wheelchairs are welcome inside, but "the size of the interior spaces prevents the use of motorized scooter chairs" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official]).
- Free wheelchairs: "Wheelchairs are available free of charge for those unable to walk around the grounds" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official]).
- Vision and hearing: braille and large-print brochures with touch-sensitive maps, printed mansion and audio-tour scripts, and a closed-captioned film (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official]).
- Quiet spots: the Cabin-by-the-Spring terrace, the Education Center porch and the Field Quarter Trail (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official]).
Heads-up: the mansion tour includes the second floor, and it's up stairs. The Hermitage says "The Hermitage Mansion is accessible on the first floor, and a photographic tour of the second floor is available for our visitors unable to climb stairs" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). The FAQ says "The Hermitage Mansion does not have an elevator, so the second floor is not accessible to those in wheelchairs" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). If you use a wheelchair, you can tour the first floor and see the second floor through the photo tour. The second floor is part of the tour, so this lowers the Paths score.
Heads-up: not every path is paved. The FAQ says "Due to the historic nature of our site, much of the grounds may present challenges to those in wheelchairs or those who have difficulty walking. Many of our paths are paved" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Use the golf cart to the mansion if you need it, and ask staff which routes are paved.
Heads-up: what the visitor center statement covers. The Hermitage says the Andrew Jackson Visitor Center is "completely accessible for guests in wheelchairs" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). That statement is on the Hermitage's accessibility page and is about the visitor center building, not the mansion; it doesn't mention restrooms, so we haven't rated restrooms yet. No restrooms on the grounds are described as accessible, and the mansion ramp is covered in the next Heads-up.
Heads-up: the mansion ramp has one source so far. The FAQ says "wheelchair ramps are available at The Hermitage Mansion" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). We haven't found a second source for the mansion entrance yet, so call (615) 889-2941 to confirm.
Heads-up: three-wheel devices stay outside the mansion. "Three-wheel scooters and three-wheel wheelchairs cannot go inside the mansion" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
Heads-up: the rear porch. "The rear porch is also not accessible to those in wheelchairs" (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). It's an optional extra.
Heads-up: garden paths and the kitchen (2014 report). A wheelchair traveler wrote in 2014 that "The kitchen which is located off of the back porch is not accessible," that "The garden paths are mostly loose gravel," and that "The main trail on the grounds is paved" (Rolling in an RV, Nov 16, 2014 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). The Hermitage now describes its pathways as smooth asphalt. Call to check the garden surface before you go.
Worth your time
Checked Oct 16, 2026.
- The VIP tour: a "90-minute guided walking tour through the grounds, mansion, gardens, and Jackson's Tomb" for up to 15 guests (Hermitage visit page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). "Highly, highly recommend this tour over the self guided tour" (TripAdvisor review, Oct 9, 2026 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). The second floor and balcony are reached by stairs, and the Hermitage says only that "Many of our paths are paved", so ask whether the VIP walking route works for you.
- Lunch at the café: Andrew & Rachel's Café serves coffee, wine, craft beer and light bites (Hermitage visit page (opens in new tab), [Official]). A visitor found a "gift shop and cafe that had good variety of items for lunch reasonably priced" (TripAdvisor review, Oct 9, 2026 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). The café is in the visitor center, which is "completely accessible for guests in wheelchairs" (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official]).
Accessibility and ratings
What we found
From the Hermitage's official page
- The FAQ: "much of the grounds may present challenges"; "Many of our paths are paved"; mansion ramps; golf carts to the mansion; no elevator to the second floor; no three-wheel devices in the mansion; the rear porch isn't accessible (Hermitage FAQ (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
- A completely accessible visitor center; smooth asphalt pathways and a ramped garden entrance; an accessible first floor in the mansion; free wheelchairs; a phone number and email for access needs (Hermitage accessibility page (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
From visitors
- Rolling in an RV (2014): "The museum and first floor of the mansion are accessible," with a paved main trail; the garden paths were mostly loose gravel and the kitchen wasn't accessible (Rolling in an RV, Nov 16, 2014 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]).
- The 10 most recent TripAdvisor reviews checked on Oct 16, 2026 (Jul–Oct 2026) didn't contradict these access details. One mentions that the VIP tour goes upstairs, which matches the official note that the second floor isn't wheelchair accessible.
Details not published
- A second source for the mansion ramp.
- Whether any restrooms, in the visitor center or elsewhere, are accessible.
- Accessible parking and drop-off (the FAQ says parking is free, but doesn't mention accessible spaces).

| Getting Around / Paths | Why: The Hermitage says "much of the grounds may present challenges to those in wheelchairs or those who have difficulty walking," and the mansion tour includes a second floor reached by stairs. Facility-published info states it is accessible; we have not personally verified this. The main pathways are paved, golf carts run to the mansion, and a photo tour covers the second floor. No contradiction in the latest visitor reviews checked Oct 16, 2026. |
| Restrooms | Not verified The visitor center is "completely accessible for guests in wheelchairs," but that line doesn't mention restrooms, and no source we checked describes accessible restrooms. |
| Parking & Drop-off | Not verified The Hermitage says parking is free, but doesn't describe accessible spaces. |
| Staff & Info | The Hermitage publishes an accessibility page, lends free wheelchairs and lists a phone number and email for access needs. |
Entry and Staff & Info score 5: the visitor center is completely accessible, and the Hermitage lends free wheelchairs and gives a phone number and email. Paths scores 4 because the Hermitage says much of its grounds may present challenges to wheelchair users, and the mansion tour goes up to a second floor reached by stairs (a photo tour covers it). Restrooms and Parking aren't rated yet: the visitor center line doesn't mention restrooms, and no accessible parking is described. The average of the 3 rated categories is 4.67, which rounds to 4.5, the same as the cap for the stated barrier on the core route.
Ratings tagged "not personally verified" rest on information the venue published or on trusted firsthand reports; we have not personally verified them.
