Last checked: Oct 16, 2026

Provisional guide: At the Cades Cove Visitor Center and Cable Mill area, staff help isn't verified yet. We'll update this guide as we confirm more.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has an accessible way into its Tennessee side. Sugarlands Visitor Center has exhibits, an information desk and book sales on one level, and the paved Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail loops about half a mile along the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. In Cades Cove, you can drive the Loop Road and see historic buildings from the car (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], page updated Jun 10, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026). Cory Lee, a wheelchair user, wrote: "My trip was completely wheelchair accessible" (Curb Free with Cory Lee, Jun 4, 2020 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Reservation dates: the park's pages don't agree on when chairs must be reserved, so confirm the current dates on the park's official page before you go: NPS trail access information (opens in new tab) ([Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Heads-up for Cades Cove: the NPS says no historic building in Cades Cove is ADA accessible. The paved 0.3-mile John Oliver Cabin path isn't ADA, and there's a step into the cabin. The paths around Cable Mill are hard-packed gravel and not ADA (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], page updated Jun 10, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026). Our team's guidance: Packed gravel is usually manageable with power chairs and scooters; loose or deep gravel, with wheeled walkers or manual chairs, can be difficult to impassable.

♿ Free GRIT all-terrain chairs: the park lends GRIT Freedom Chairs in adult and child sizes at no charge from the Sugarlands and Oconaluftee visitor centers. Users need core strength and head control, the weight limit is 250 lb, and a companion must come along. They're approved on about 14 miles of trails. Near Sugarlands and Cades Cove: Gatlinburg Trail (2 mi), Little River to Husky Gap (2.7 mi), Cataract Falls (0.5 mi), John Oliver (0.25 mi) and Elijah Oliver (0.5 mi) (NPS trail access information (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).

What we found

Sugarlands Visitor Center

  • The visitor center is ADA accessible. The information desk, book sales and exhibits are all on one level (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], page updated Jun 10, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • Designated accessible parking, and ADA restrooms outside the visitor center (same page).
  • Check this (TripAdvisor review, May 8, 2023, visit Sep 2022): a visitor wrote, "Only drawback is the steep incline where you park." It's a single, older review, so it doesn't change a score (TripAdvisor (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail

  • The NPS calls it "the only ADA accessible trail in the park." It's a paved loop of about 0.5 mile, just south of Sugarlands Visitor Center on Newfound Gap Road (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], page updated Jun 10, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • Grade and width: Not verified. The NPS doesn't publish them, so the trail isn't scored separately.

Cades Cove

  • Accessible parking is near the sidewalk to the ADA restrooms, and a ramp leads into the visitor center, which has information and a small bookstore (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], page updated Jun 10, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • The Loop Road is drivable, and you can see the historic buildings from the car (same page).
  • The campground store and nearby restrooms are ADA. ADA campsites can be reserved at Cades Cove, Smokemont and Elkmont (same page).

Other access

  • Service animals: leashed, trained service dogs are welcome. Emotional-support, therapy and companion animals aren't service animals (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], page updated Jun 10, 2026, checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • Tours and media: self-guided auto-tour booklets for Cades Cove and other areas are sold at visitor centers, and some tours are in the free NPS app, which also lists accessibility details. The page mentions an audio-described version of media (same page).
  • Firsthand report: Cory Lee, a wheelchair user, wrote, "My trip was completely wheelchair accessible," after a socially distanced weekend. He covers the drivable loop, a motor nature trail and a paved trail, and recommends the free Access Pass (Curb Free with Cory Lee, Jun 4, 2020 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026). We found no hosting disclosure in that post. A separate post (Aug 21, 2020) was a giveaway of a stay from Smokies Cabin LLC at its Eagles View cabin, upgradable to the Above the Clouds cabin for the cost difference, so we don't use his cabin suggestions (Curb Free with Cory Lee, Aug 21, 2020 (opens in new tab), checked Oct 16, 2026).

What other sources report

  • Check this (secondary source): an undated visitcadescove.com guide says the visitor center parking and restrooms are accessible and the historic-site paths are mostly not ADA (visitcadescove.com (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Not verified

  • Loaner standard wheelchairs at the visitor centers: not found on the park's pages.
  • Restrooms along the Cades Cove loop, other than at the visitor center and campground store.
  • Cades Cove Visitor Center exhibit layout.
  • Audio description specifics, braille, large print, tactile exhibits and ASL: not described on the page.

We'll update this page when we can.
