Good to know: the aquarium doesn't describe the route from parking to River Place Ticketing. Ask when you call ahead.

What we found

Getting around

Parking

  • The primary lot has 4 designated handicap spaces close to the buildings. They're paid and not guaranteed, and a few more are in surrounding lots (parking and directions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Restrooms

Wheelchairs

  • The aquarium says it has a limited number of free manual wheelchairs, first come, first served, with no reservations. They're sponsored by Morning Pointe Senior Living. Personal power chairs and scooters are welcome (accessibility and inclusion (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026; FAQs and policies (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Visit Chattanooga also calls them free ("a limited number of manual wheelchairs available for complimentary use," Visit Chattanooga (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026), but Cory Lee wrote in 2019 that "wheelchairs are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis for $7" (Curb Free with Cory Lee, May 16, 2019 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026). Call the aquarium to ask whether there's a charge before you go.
  • Conflicting details: the accessibility page says to leave a photo ID and pick up the chair at the Guest Services Information Desk "near the River Journey Gift Shop." The FAQ says a driver's license, and "at the River Journey exit." It's probably the same desk; ask when you arrive.

Sensory support

  • Sensory bags with fidget tools, noise-canceling headphones and other resources can be checked out at no cost by leaving an ID, at the Guest Services Desk at the Aquarium, the IMAX 3D Theater and the Conservation Institute (accessibility and inclusion (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • Weighted lap pads are available at the IMAX 3D Theater on request, at no cost by leaving an ID (same page).
  • A Social Story helps you plan your visit (same page).
  • The aquarium has partnered with KultureCity and gives its team members continuous training on sensory needs (same page).
  • A nursing room on River Journey A-level, near the elevator or escalator, sometimes doubles as a quiet space for a sensory break. Another nursing room is in the IMAX women's restroom (same page).

Service animals

  • ADA service dogs or miniature horses are welcome. All service animals "must be vetted in the River Place Ticketing Center prior to admission into any building," and receive a complimentary bandana. The Butterfly Garden has free-roaming birds and reptiles, so don't enter if your service animal could pose a risk to them (accessibility and inclusion (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
  • Pets aren't allowed (FAQs and policies (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Firsthand report: Cory Lee

Cory Lee, a wheelchair user, wrote that the aquarium's "wheelchair accessibility is also fantastic with access to all exhibits," and that "An accessible family style restroom is located on level 1 of the River Journey building" (Curb Free with Cory Lee, May 16, 2019 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026). Visit Chattanooga also says "All exhibit galleries at the Tennessee Aquarium are wheelchair accessible" (Visit Chattanooga (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026), and two 2026 TripAdvisor reviewers agree: "I love that they have rails for people in wheelchairs" (TripAdvisor review, Aug 2026 (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026) and "Handicapped people seemed to be able to negotiate easily" (TripAdvisor review, Apr 2026 (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026). His trip was hosted: he thanks the Chattanooga Convention and Visitor's Bureau and says "most of my experiences were complimentary." He paid $7 to rent a wheelchair in 2019; the aquarium now lends them free.

Staff & Info 4 of 5 · Very accessible
Why: Strong published information and supports; staff knowledge isn't verified firsthand.

The aquarium's dedicated accessibility page says all exhibit galleries are wheelchair accessible, and Cory Lee reports access to all exhibits. Under our ADA compliance standard, that covers Entry and Restrooms at 5 (Venue states accessible). Paths scores 5: the galleries are inside buildings, every building has elevators, and no official barrier is published. Parking scores 5: the aquarium confirms 4 designated accessible spaces; van-space data isn't published, and missing details don't lower a score. Staff & Info scores 4 for loaner wheelchairs (call to ask whether there's a charge), free sensory bags and lap pads, KultureCity staff training and detailed published information. Overall is 5 of 5, the average of the 5 rated categories.

Ratings tagged "not personally verified" rest on information the venue published or on trusted firsthand reports; we have not personally verified them.
