Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive

Checked on Oct 16, 2026

Provisional guide: entry and staff help aren't verified yet. The park has posted alerts, including one dated 10/11/2026 that reads: "Due to the impacts associated with the remnants of Hurricane Isaias, we are currently experiencing power outages at the Big Meadows Developed Area…" (NPS: Shenandoah conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). We'll update this guide as we confirm more.

In Shenandoah National Park, you can take in the Blue Ridge from your car: "The majority of overlooks along Skyline Drive have an accessible parking area for visitors to take in the spectacular views from their vehicle" (NPS: Shenandoah accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). The park also says "Accessible overnight lodging is available at Lewis Mountain, Skyland Resort, and Big Meadows Lodge," and that Limberlost Trail "is a fully-accessible circuit hike" (same page).

All-terrain options: "All-terrain wheelchairs and accessibility hiking carts are permitted anywhere foot travel is allowed, including trails and wilderness." The park adds: "Please contact Community Gear Library by sending an email to communitygearlibrary@gmail.com for information about reserving an accessibility hiking cart at no cost" (NPS: Shenandoah accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). The Community Gear Library is a partner, not the park.

Call to confirm before you go: for general information and trip planning, the park lists (540) 999-3500, option 5 (NPS: Shenandoah visitor centers (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Ask whether the Big Meadows power outage is still affecting services, and about visitor center hours. In an emergency, dial 911 (see the Heads-up below).

Heads-up: emergency phone line down. "Emergency Phone Line Unavailable | Date Posted: 10/10/2026 | Shenandoah National Park Emergency Phone number (1-800-732-0911) is currently unavailable. For all emergencies, Park visitors can dial 911" (NPS: Shenandoah conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Heads-up: Big Meadows power outages. Posted 10/11/2026: "Due to the impacts associated with the remnants of Hurricane Isaias, we are currently experiencing power outages at the Big Meadows Developed Area…" (NPS: Shenandoah conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Call ahead before relying on Big Meadows services.

Heads-up: Naked Creek closure. Posted 10/7/2026: "… the Naked Creek backcountry zone is closed to all recreation until further notice" (NPS: Shenandoah conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).

Heads-up: Limberlost isn't level all the way. The NPS calls Limberlost "fully-accessible" (NPS: Shenandoah accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026), but its own trail page lists running slopes up to 10.3% and a narrowest point of 2.7 ft, on a surface of mostly crushed greenstone (NPS: Limberlost Trail (opens in new tab), [Official], last updated Nov 7, 2021). A wheelchair user who visited in 2015 reported that the trailhead sign marks only part of the loop as meeting the standard, that the bridge is where wheelchairs are no longer recommended, and suggested going in the direction that takes the steepest parts downhill (Wheelchair Travel Adventures (archived copy), May 2015 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). "Our team's guidance: Packed gravel is usually manageable with power chairs and scooters; loose or deep gravel, with wheeled walkers or manual chairs, can be difficult to impassable."

Heads-up: "accessible with assistance." The park's line on restrooms and buildings is "Most restrooms and buildings are accessible, or accessible with assistance" (NPS: Shenandoah accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Trailhead restrooms and parking at Limberlost aren't described.
