Accessibility and ratings
Heads-up: one visitor reported a step (Aug 2023). A wheelchair user wrote: "The “accessible” entrance is with a step and nobody is there to help you," and said staff "told me I needed to move the ramp by myself if I wanted to move around the museum" (TripAdvisor review, Aug 29, 2023 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). The museum now says the entrance is "without steps" and that staff "are available to set up or take down these ramps upon request" (Poe Museum visit (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). The museum also says of that entrance: "Please call the number on the gate and an employee will open this entryway" (Poe Museum visit (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Call ahead to confirm.
Heads-up: raised doorways. "There are a number of raised doorways as entries and exits to Poe Museum exhibit buildings. The narrowest doorway is 28 inches wide, and the steepest step to a door is 9 inches above the ground" (Poe Museum visit (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
Heads-up: the Reading Room stairs. "There is one staircase at the Poe Museum (salvaged from Poe’s childhood home!) which leads to the Reading Room. For visitors unable to explore the Reading Room, a binder containing a summary of the room’s contents is provided on the first floor" (Poe Museum visit (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026).
