Skyline Drive in Fall: An Accessible Guide to Shenandoah National Park
Last checked: Oct 14, 2026
On Skyline Drive, the NPS says most overlooks have an accessible parking area so you can take in the view from your car, and most restrooms and buildings are accessible or accessible with assistance.
Plan your visit
Closures and alerts first: as of Oct 16, 2026 the park had posted alerts, including one dated 10/11/2026 that reads: "Due to the impacts associated with the remnants of Hurricane Isaias, we are currently experiencing power outages at the Big Meadows Developed Area…" (NPS: Shenandoah conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026). Full alert list (including the 10/10/2026 emergency-phone and 10/7/2026 Naked Creek alerts): Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. Skyline Drive can close in bad weather. Check before you go: Shenandoah conditions (opens in new tab), or text SHENALERTS to 888777 for alerts.
The route
- The drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge and takes about 3 hours end to end without stops.
- It's generally open 24/7 but can close in bad weather.
- Fee: $15–$30 depending on vehicle type. The Access Pass (free for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with a permanent disability) is honored. Automated entry stations are being installed this fall.
- Avoid the longest lines: the NPS says the northern entrances (Front Royal and Thornton Gap) have the longest fall waits. It suggests entering at Swift Run or Rockfish instead.
When to go
The park says the exact peak can't be predicted. It posts weekly fall update videos on Thursdays and has webcams. Check the fall page (opens in new tab) and fall color reports (opens in new tab) before you go. When we checked, the color-report page had last been updated Sep 23.
Accessibility
Accessibility scores: this drive page doesn't rate stops. For the park's accessibility ratings, see Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive.

♿ All-terrain options: all-terrain wheelchairs are allowed anywhere foot travel is, and a free accessibility hiking cart can be borrowed through the Community Gear Library (communitygearlibrary@gmail.com), according to the NPS (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026).
What we found
Accessible stops and services
- Overlooks: most have an accessible parking area for viewing from the car.
- Restrooms: most restrooms, including those at picnic grounds, are accessible or accessible with assistance.
- Limberlost Trail (MP 43): the NPS calls this 1.3-mile loop "fully accessible." The surface is mostly crushed greenstone, about 5 feet wide in most places. The trailhead is listed as wheelchair accessible. (NPS Limberlost (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026) No current alerts mention the trail. (NPS conditions (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026)
- Know before you go: the NPS's own trail specs list a running slope of up to 10.3% and a narrowest point of 2.7 feet. That page was last updated on Nov 7, 2021. (NPS Limberlost (opens in new tab))
- A wheelchair user who visited in 2015 reported that the trailhead sign marks only part of the loop as accessible, and that wheelchairs aren't advised past the bridge. This is a secondary report, so check conditions with the park before you go. (Wheelchair Travel Adventures, 2015, archived copy (opens in new tab), checked Oct 16, 2026)
- Trailhead parking and restrooms aren't described in the sources we found.
- All-terrain wheelchairs are allowed anywhere foot travel is. A free accessibility hiking cart is available through the Community Gear Library (communitygearlibrary@gmail.com).
- Visitor centers: assistive listening devices are available at both.
- Stay overnight: accessible lodging is available at Skyland, Big Meadows Lodge and Lewis Mountain. Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain and Loft Mountain campgrounds have accessible showers and laundry, and every campground and picnic ground has accessible sites.
We haven't included mileposts for individual stops yet. Use the park map at the entrance station or in the NPS app.
