Accessibility and ratings
Reported, check before visiting: boardwalk partly closed. An NPS alert titled "Portion of the boardwalk is closed," dated Jul 10, 2025, says: "The last section of boardwalk is closed for ADA accessibility. Sorry for the inconvenience." It was listed in the NPS alerts feed when checked Oct 16, 2026 (NPS alerts feed, [Official], checked Oct 16, 2026; NPS Russell Cave home page (opens in new tab)). The NPS hasn't given a cause or how long the closure will last. Right now the final stretch of boardwalk to the cave shelter is closed,. The NPS accessibility page (last updated Dec 9, 2019) still says the boardwalk is wheelchair accessible and doesn't mention the closure. Paths is Not verified until the park confirms. Call the park to confirm the boardwalk is open before you go.
Heads-up: parking lot closed Oct 27–28, 2026. A current NPS alert says the parking lot will be closed on those dates. Separate bridge work on Oct 19 is expected to leave the park open to visitors (NPS Russell Cave conditions (opens in new tab), checked Oct 16, 2026).
What we found
Getting there and getting in
- Boardwalk: it's 0.2 mi each way (about 0.4 mi round trip), from the visitor center to the cave shelter (NPS FAQ (opens in new tab); NPS beginning of boardwalk (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026).
- The NPS says "The entire boardwalk is handicap accessible." There are handrails the whole way and slight inclines at the start and near the cave. Benches are only at the start and the end, so plan your rests (NPS (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026).
- The NPS describes the trail as "slightly undulating but is wheelchair and stroller accessible." (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026)
- Grade and width: Not verified. The NPS doesn't publish them.
- The separate paved hiking trail isn't part of the accessible route. A visitor guide reports it's steep (about 14% on average, about 30% in places) and mossy (National Park Planner (opens in new tab), secondary, checked Oct 14, 2026).
- Parking: the NPS lists "Handicapped parking spaces for standard sized vehicles." It doesn't mention van-accessible spaces, so plan ahead if you use a side-lift van. Restrooms: the NPS lists accessible restrooms (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026).
- Loaner wheelchair: one is available at the visitor center (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026).
- Visitor center: "Concrete sidewalks from the parking lot lead to the visitor center… The Visitor Center lobby, restrooms, museum exhibit area, book store and video room are all wheelchair accessible." (NPS accessibility (opens in new tab), checked Oct 14, 2026)
Re-check due: the NPS accessibility page these ratings rely on was last updated Dec 9, 2019, more than 12 months ago.

Entry scores 5: concrete sidewalks lead from the parking lot to a visitor center the NPS calls wheelchair accessible. Restrooms score 5: the NPS says the visitor center restrooms are wheelchair accessible, and Cory Lee confirms "the Visitor's Center also has an accessible restroom" (Curb Free with Cory Lee, Sep 7, 2023 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 16, 2026). Paths is Not verified: the NPS calls the boardwalk accessible, but its alert (last updated Jul 10, 2025, still listed Oct 16, 2026) says "The last section of boardwalk is closed for ADA accessibility" (NPS alert "Portion of the boardwalk is closed," dated Jul 10, 2025, listed in the NPS alerts feed when checked Oct 16, 2026, [Official]), so we can't confirm you can reach the cave shelter. Overall is 5 of 5, the average of the 3 rated categories.
Ratings tagged "not personally verified" rest on information the venue published or on trusted firsthand reports; we have not personally verified them.
Heads-up: Wooden boardwalks can be slippery when wet, especially under trees; this affects people walking (including with canes or walkers) more than people in wheelchairs or scooters.
