What we found
From Ivy Green's official pages
- Arrival: "For most convenient access, drop off is available at the rear of the home" (accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Inside the home: "Guests in wheelchairs can explore most rooms on the first floor of the House. Motorized wheelchairs are permitted as long as they do not exceed the 30″ dimensions of the interior doorways of the house." The upper floor isn't covered (accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Grounds: "Ivy Green is a historic site, so not all paths are smooth by wheelchair, but are accessible… Most paths are either brick or bare ground. Wheelchair access to the home, the grounds and the outdoor theatre at Ivy Green, is possible." The page also advises guests with limited mobility "to build extra time into their schedule" (accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Restrooms: "Accessible restrooms, are located on the grounds but not inside the home" (punctuation as published; accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Other help: brochures for deaf and hard-of-hearing guests. Certified service dogs are allowed in the house "only when utilized for assisted care" (accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 15, 2026).
What other sources report (secondary; not verified)
- Check this (secondary source): a reviewer quoted on Airial notes "2 HC parking spaces out front" and suggests allowing 90 minutes (Airial (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 15, 2026). Ivy Green doesn't publish parking details.
- Check this (secondary source): a TripAdvisor review says the second floor is reached by a staircase and the inside isn't handicap-friendly, while the grounds and restrooms are accessible. One reviewer (Apr 8, 2023) wrote, "the house is not handicap friendly nor is any material in braille," and another (Jun 16, 2024) notes "the house has a second story with stairs." A single review doesn't change a score, and Cory Lee found the doorway easy to enter in 2025 (TripAdvisor (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 16, 2026).
- A guide from the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA, the organization behind Visit North Alabama) describes an accessible rear entrance through the garden (AMLA guide, Oct 2025 (opens in new tab), [Trusted source], checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Firsthand report: Cory Lee, a power-wheelchair user, found "wheelchair accessible free parking near the entrance," rolled "up the paved sidewalk" around the left side of the house to the back door, and says "This doorway was easy to enter in my power wheelchair" (Curb Free with Cory Lee, Jun 2, 2025 (opens in new tab), [Trusted firsthand source], checked Oct 15, 2026).
- Check this (secondary source): Colbert County Tourism says a loaner wheelchair and a full Braille brochure are now available, and that wheelchair user Cory Lee toured the first floor and the water pump (Colbert County Tourism (opens in new tab), [Secondary], checked Oct 15, 2026). Ivy Green's own page doesn't mention a loaner, so it doesn't score.
- AMLA donated five Meta smart glasses for blind and low-vision visitors (Visit North Alabama press release, Jun 15, 2026 (opens in new tab), [Trusted], checked Oct 15, 2026).

Heads-up: Ivy Green's own page says getting into the home "may require assistance, depending on the wheelchair type and/or occupant strength," so bring a companion if your chair or strength makes that likely. Visit North Alabama's write-up of Cory Lee's 2025 visit adds: "The accessible rear entrance winds gently through a garden" (Visit North Alabama (opens in new tab), [Trusted], checked Oct 16, 2026). Paths scores 4: Cory Lee, a trusted firsthand reviewer, rolled up the paved sidewalk to the back door and toured the first floor without flagging a problem, but Ivy Green itself notes 30-inch interior doorways and access to most first-floor rooms. Restrooms score 5: the official page says accessible restrooms are on the grounds. Parking scores 5: Cory Lee, a trusted firsthand source, found free accessible parking near the entrance; van spaces aren't described, and missing details don't lower a score. Staff & Info is Not verified. Help is available on request, but no free loaner is confirmed on an official page. Overall is 4.5 of 5: the average of the 4 rated categories (4.75) rounds to 5, but Overall can't show 5 when a category has a stated barrier.
Ratings tagged "not personally verified" rest on information the venue published or on trusted firsthand reports; we have not personally verified them.
