Heads-up: gravel on Green River Road. The NPS describes the Historic Green River Road trail as "a 1.8 mile wide gravel road," with "a firm grassy shoulder in addition to the pea gravel." It "is level with 15 foot elevation change over the entire distance" (NPS: Historic Green River Road (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026). A 2024 guide says the loop is "one half being paved and the other half being the gravel Green River Road" (National Park Planner, updated Jul 19, 2024 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). A visitor in April 2024 noted "some of the paths are not paved" (TripAdvisor review, Apr 9, 2024 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]). The official Historic Green River Road trail is gravel, while reviews from 2017 (TripAdvisor review, Sep 15, 2017 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]) and 2021 (TripAdvisor review, Oct 2021 (opens in new tab), [Secondary]) describe the battlefield loop as paved; a 2024 guide says part of the loop follows the gravel road, so call to confirm before you go.

Heads-up: trail hazards (active alert). "Visitors should exercise caution when hiking areas of the park that have opened since Hurricane Helene. Hazards on trails and in forested areas such as hanging tree limbs, debris on the ground, and washed-out sections of trails and bridges are possible" (NPS: Cowpens conditions (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Nov 2, 2026).
