Natchez & River Road Trip Plan
Checked on Oct 24, 2026 (facts carry the date each source was last checked)
Call to confirm before you go. Several of these historic houses have stairs, and key access details for some stops aren't published yet. Each one is marked below. Call each place before you go, and tell them what you need.
This plan follows the river from Natchez, Mississippi, into Louisiana's plantation country. The two stops with published access details are Cane River Creole National Historical Park near Natchitoches and Oak Alley on River Road. The Natchez houses, Stanton Hall and Longwood, aren't on this route yet, because their access details aren't fully published; they're listed with Heads-ups near the end. Bring your own chair or scooter; trails and grounds can be rough.
Cane River Creole National Historical Park (near Natchitoches, Louisiana)
This park is near Natchitoches, Louisiana, not Natchez.
- Oakland: "The Plantation Store, Main House, and Overseer's House are equipped with chair lifts. The restrooms are accessible and located in the Pavilion near the parking lot."
- Magnolia: the Overseer's House has a chair lift, and the Cotton Gin Barn and one Quarters Cabin have ramps. Accessible restrooms are at the Plantation Store.
- Texas & Pacific Railway Depot: ramps, and accessible restrooms in both historic waiting rooms.
- Assistive listening devices and a braille brochure are available; call 318-352-0383 x316 (NPS Cane River accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 22, 2026).
Heads-up: the park says visitors "may encounter rough, muddy, and uneven trail surfaces," and wheelchair users may need assistance.
- Check before you go: the park keeps limited days, and the Oakland Main House opens on fewer days than the rest of the park. Check the park's hours page or call before you set the day.
Full guide: Cane River Creole NHP.
Oak Alley Plantation (Vacherie, Louisiana): River Road add-on
- The site says "Most exhibits are handicapped accessible." Basic and motorized wheelchairs are permitted but can't reach the second floor of the Big House; "For guests unable to climb the 22 stairs, a video tour is available in the media room." Bring your own mobility device (Oak Alley tips for your visit (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 24, 2026).
Heads-up: restrooms aren't described on the official pages. Call ahead to confirm accessible restrooms.
- Parking: not confirmed yet. Call ahead.
Not on this route yet: Natchez houses and Rosedown
- Stanton Hall: call ahead. The official listing says "Wheelchair Access: First floor only" (Natchez Pilgrimage: Stanton Hall (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 24, 2026).
Heads-up: staff told us "The step-free entrance to Stanton Hall is just off the back porch. It is a covered ramp," that there are "accessible bathrooms near the back entrance/exit," and that accessible parking is "to the left of the main entrances adjacent to the house." "The original staircases provide the only access to the second floors" ([Venue email], Natchez Pilgrimage tour office). The entrance is not confirmed yet on the official page, so call ahead to confirm the entrance, restrooms and parking before you go.
- Longwood: call ahead. The official page doesn't describe access.
Heads-up: staff told us the step-free entrance "is the same entrance everyone else uses and is on the ground floor," that there are accessible bathrooms and designated parking, and that with the "gravel drive and parking lot, it is best to disembark close to the house, then park in the accessible spaces closest to it" ([Venue email], Natchez Pilgrimage tour office). Step-free entry is not confirmed yet, so call ahead before you go.
Rosedown (St. Francisville, Louisiana)
We haven't been able to confirm access for Rosedown's grounds and visitor center, so it isn't part of this plan yet.
Heads-up: staff told us "The entrance to the historic home has 5 steps with a handrail" and there is "No elevator in the historic home." The grounds are "mostly pea gravel" ([Venue email], Rosedown State Historic Site). Call the park before you plan a visit.
Drive times between stops: not measured yet. Check a map app before you set the day.
Worth your time
- Oakland's Main House, by chair lift. Oakland's Main House is one of the buildings the park says is "equipped with chair lifts," so you can go inside the plantation home (NPS Cane River accessibility (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 22, 2026). Check its open days before you go.
- Oak Alley's media-room video tour. If the 22 stairs rule out the second floor, the site offers a video tour in the media room (Oak Alley tips for your visit (opens in new tab), [Official], checked Oct 24, 2026). Accessibility not verified.
